Standby Equipment
In
spite of the fact that most cryonicists know the importance of
standby support, many members have no training in this regard.
Those interested in learning more about these life-saving
techniques should arrive at the potluck at 3:00 sharp.
Ben Best will provide an overview of the standby equipment
maintained by the Toronto group and discuss how a standby team
would prepare a patient for transport.
Discussion
At
5:00 p.m. our Director-at-Large, Ben Best, will speak to the
group on:
The
Science Behind Cryonics
Ben
will also discuss the 2007 Cryobiology Conference he attended
in Banff.

KEITH HENSON NEEDS HELP
Keith Henson has a long history of activism in cryonics. He was central
to the legal fight defending Alcor following the raiding of the Riverside
facility. He has participated personally in about 18 Alcor cryopreservations.
He claims (probably with good cause) that he has been personally
responsible for the signing-up of the majority of Alcor members in the
Silicon Valley area. He has been a close friend of Eric Drexler.
More recently Keith has devoted his life to a fight against Scientology.
I would not recommend that anyone do this. The consequences for
Keith have been grim -- he has been charged with religious persecution
in California and has reason to believe that if he is sent to prison he
will be killed (thanks to a strong anti-narcotics program Scientologists
have established in the prison system -- giving them many inside contacts).
He fled to Canada seeking refugee status, but this has been denied.
Those living in Canada who wish to help Keith can write/e-mail to their
MP requesting that Keith not be deported.
Those not living in Canada who wish to help, can e-mail Keith's MP:
Keith Henson's MP is Lloyd St Amand

TORONTO WORLD SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION ROOM PARTIES
The World Science Fiction Convention (WorldCon) was held in Toronto,
Canada August 28 to September 1, 2003. (See
http://www.torcon3.on.ca/)
We obtained a room at the Royal York Hotel where we held
cryonics room parties Thursday, August 28 and Friday, August 29).
Hundreds of people dropped in -- with much more
activity on Thursday evening than on Friday. In my
experience parties on Saturday and Sunday tend to be
more sparsely attended -- and would not have been
cost-justified.
Almost everyone attending these parties seem to be in
one of two categories (1) already convinced that cryonics
is a good idea -- signed-up or wanting to sign-up OR
(2) having absolutely no serious interest in cryonics,
but wanting to check out the parties and the food. Only
a few rare people knew little or nothing and were curious
to learn more or make contact with others who shared
their interest -- my main target audience.
Most of those who were in category (2) did not stay
long. So the partying mostly consisted of people in
category (1) talking to each other. I hope the information
exchange was valuable and increased the incentive of those
who are already interested in cryonics to sign-up --
and increased the ability of those who are signed-up to
find ways to grow cryonics or to make it better.
My main objective had been to meet Canadians with an
interest in cryonics so as to involve them in the CSC list
and/or local networking and/or contributing to local
response preparedness. The attendees were overwhelmingly
American -- there were few Canadians other than those
already in our local group. We met far more Canadians at
the Winnipeg WorldCon. But in Winnipeg we had a Dealer's
table and had parties for four nights rather than just two
and we had a panel.
As for those showing interest in joining the CSC list
(the Cryonics Society of Canada e-mail list)
I got 7 names about half of which were Canadians (although
one of the Canadians wrote an illegible e-mail address).
Overall, the experience is not radically different from
my past outreach activities -- a lot of effort for a small
response. I have been doing this for years, however, and
the cumulative incremental results have become increasingly
substantive.
